Day 3
Flight to Valdez
Take the scheduled flight from Anchorage to Valdez. Upon arrival, take a taxi to your hotel. Valdez is the activity centre for Prince William Sound. A mix of tidewater glaciers, rain forests and mountains. Fur trading, salmon canning and gold and copper mining attributed to the growth and settlement of Valdez. Between 1897-98, the Klondike Gold Rush bought prospectors to Valdez. From 1910 - 1916, copper and gold mining flourished in this area. Then in the early 1970’s Valdez became the staging area for work on the lower portion of the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Valdez has a few museums giving a detailed history of this area and today, Valdez hosts the Valdez Marine Terminal which is the southernmost end of the 800 mile pipeline.
Day 4
Valdez - Columbia Glacier Cruise
Today you’ll enjoy the Columbia Glacier Cruise with lunch onboard.
This 6 hour journey travels through Prince William Sound and will include a visit to the Columbia Glacier. Here, you’ll witness history in the making as the Glacier retreats back into the Chugach Mountains. In addition to the amazing ice you’ll see in Columbia Bay, you’ll also see plenty of wildlife as well as the history of mining, oil shipping, earthquake, and the fishing history of this area.
